Gender Equity issues within Academia related to COVID-19

In 2020, former GenEQ postdoc student Merin Oleschuk conducted a literature review of gender equity issues related to promotion and tenure as they were exacerbated under COVID-19. The review highlights how the pandemic has intensified pre-existing gender inequalities in academic, particularly by disproportionally increasing care responsibilities for women, which has hindered their research productivity. Early data show that women’s academic output, including journal submissions and new research projects, has declined compared to their male colleagues since the onset of the pandemic. These disparities are especially pronounced for early caregiver female academics and are likely to have long-term effects on career advancement and equity in academic promotion processes. The published version of this document can be found here. A conversation with Oleschuk about the commentary was also featured in the Journal's podcast, CRStal Radio.
